The Channel of Openness
Social Being
Overview
Channel 12-22, The Channel of Openness, connects the Solar Plexus Center to the Throat Center through Gate 22 (Openness) and Gate 12 (Caution). It belongs to the Knowing Circuit within the Individual Circuit Group. This is a Manifested channel with the design theme "A Design of a Social Being."
The keynote is Emotional Openness Guided by Mood. the literally miraculous qualities of articulation that developed through the mutation of the larynx (Gate 12) 85,000 years ago, which set the stage for humans to not only communicate their intelligence but to emotionally impact others with the quality of their voice. The vocal vibration or tone of your voice speaks louder than your choice of words.
Openness in this channel is dependent on the ebb and flow of the emotional wave or mood. It creatively voices or acts out the moodiness, melancholy, passion, romance, and drama of the Individual emotional wave. There is a quality of restraint in Gate 12 that governs Gate 22's openness, limiting it to social interactions with people who appear to have the most mutative potential.

Deep Dive
Gate 22 and Gate 12
Gate 22 (Openness) sits in the Solar Plexus Center with the hexagram name Grace. It combines the potential for emotional openness through listening with a social grace and charm that is highly attractive to others when it is in the right mood. When the mood changes, a dramatically different and sometimes antisocial side may be experienced. Gate 22 hears with the left ear. These Individuals hear what they feel like hearing. For them to know something fully, it must be repeated and heard over time.
Gate 12 (Caution) sits in the Throat Center with the hexagram name Standstill. The articulate, mutative, and moody voice of the Individual is restrained by a natural caution. This caution keeps you silent until your mood tells you that you really do have something to say, as well as a unique, transformative way of saying it. Standing still, or contemplating a unique perception until in the mood to express it creatively, gives your message time to mature.
The Mood Orientation
The social channel of Individual circuitry is guided by a "when I am in the mood" orientation that is not focused on being either social or friendly. The teachings is specific: Individuals are generally less interested in mating (Tribal) or sharing (Collective) than they are in creating a receptive environment for their potential to bring transformative new awareness to Collective and Tribe.
The key for people with this manifesting channel is to wait until they feel like interacting socially. If forced into social situations when on the low ebb of their wave, they can be misunderstood, become angry and abrupt, and fail to empower others. Such social failures, repeated over time, can lead to anti-social behaviors and isolation.
Voice as Instrument
You use the quality and inflection in your voice to move or touch people in order to educate, mutate, and communicate. When your mood and timing are in sync, you can empower others to vicariously experience love's full range of emotions through mediums such as public speaking, acting, poetry, or music.
You have your greatest impact on others as a "stranger of consequence": like a performer, you translate and creatively express the joys and sorrows of loving and living, then you withdraw. When not in the mood, chances are your audience will not hear what you want them to or experience the transformation that interacting with you can bring. Impeccable timing maximizes the potential impact you can have on social and cultural norms.
Grace in Action
Gate 22 listens to others until they complete what they are saying, making what you have to say naturally come second. this as grace in action, as well as the key to your own empowerment. It is your responsibility and privilege to use your social listening skills in a way that makes change available to others.
The Solar Plexus is your authority, so it is imperative that you do not act impulsively. The measure of patience you cultivate, and the creative depth of feelings you allow yourself to experience by listening through your wave, determine how powerful your Individual mutative impact will be in the world. The not-self pattern is anger: anti-social behaviors and isolation, social failures and misunderstandings, impulsive actions before emotional clarity.
