Human Design Gate

Increase

Growth

Overview

Gate 42 — Increase — sits in the Sacral Center within the Collective Abstract Circuit. Its I Ching hexagram is Increase. It forms Channel 42-53 (Maturation) with harmonic gate 53 in the Root Center, creating the design Balanced Development. Gate 53 provides the beginning pressure; Gate 42 provides the energy to see it through.

The keynote is Growth — The Expansion of Resources Which Maximizes Development of Full Potential. Gate 42 is the gate of cycle completion. Its single clearest teaching: do it once, have the experience, bank it, and move to the next thing. This is the literal foundation of the abstract experiential way. Diversification is not a preference for Gate 42 — it is the operating principle. You are not meant to repeat what you have already experienced. You are meant to complete each cycle fully and then release it.

Key Points

  • Energy for cycle completion
  • Growth through finishing
  • Must complete what is begun
  • Response guides which cycles to complete

The 6 Lines

1

Diversify Wisely

Surplus resources serve additional experience—control expansion. Centrifugal decadence destroys energy capacity—moderate diversification maintaining power. - **Line 2 - Identify Carefully:** Project resource-availability, test diversity-shown. Don't know if it's for you naturally—careful identification determining maximum growth protecting from double-speed depletion. - **Line 3 - Efficiency Over Ambition:** Trial/error learning—eliminate nonessentials efficiently. 'Selfishness justified in decr

2

Identification

Identification and research that determines and values maximum growth—power through careful identification (Venus exalted). Or instinctive assistance, admirable but misguided, where two will use up resources twice as fast as one—energy fueling sharing feeling (Mars detriment). Projecting resources-availability, diversity showing itself—don't know if it's for you, testing required.

3

Trial and Error

Efficiency through elimination of nonessentials—power through efficiency (Moon exalted). Or material ambition and discipline to go it alone—energy fueling personal ambition feeling (Jupiter detriment). Trial-and-error learning efficiency versus selfish ambition—sharing versus aloneness; 'in times of decrease selfishness is justified' teaching moderation.

4

Organizer

Maximization of growth through selection—power to attract resources for growth (Mars exalted). Or misguided use of resources for growth whose application is social rather than practical—power that undermines growth through social prioritization over pragmatism (Pluto detriment). Fourth-line fixed externalization—helping others concentrate, ensuring energy placement correctly versus social-environment prioritizing over pragmatic completion.

5

Self-Actualization

Independent use of growth that is self-regulating—power to complete a cycle alone (Uranus exalted freedom). Or independent use of growth regulated only by the limitations of resources—power of growth limited by resources (Saturn detriment limitation). Fifth-line universalizing energy-sharing—independent/dependent dichotomy; alone versus needing others for completion recognition.

6

Nurturing

Natural and instinctive nurturing of others—power to share growth process with others (Jupiter exalted). Or restrictive and malefic materialism that is self-alienating and encourages aggression—power to restrict growth (Saturn detriment). Roof-sitting wondering: which processes serve sharing-nurturing versus restrictive materialistic selfishness? Family 37.1 Mother/Father requiring nurturing quality—King Midas touching food turning gold, unable to eat material success-making.

Practical Tips

  • Complete what you respond to begin
  • Growth comes through finishing
  • Uncompleted cycles drain energy

Not-Self Signs

  • Starting without completing
  • Trapped in cycles without end
  • Forced growth without response

Deep Dive

Completion Before New Beginnings

Gate 42 carries sacral tenacity — the life force to stay with a process until it reaches its natural end. The abstract cyclical law applies here with full force: if a new cycle is begun before a former cycle completes, what was left unfinished will revisit the new one. Ra was specific about this in relationships: unresolved patterns from childhood, from past partnerships, from incomplete experiences can surface in new contexts because the cycle was never allowed to close. The discomfort of staying with something difficult is the gate's wisdom, not stubbornness. Commitment is honored until completion — not because completion is comfortable, but because it is necessary.

Decadence and Energy Placement

Ra used the word decadence specifically for Gate 42 — not moral corruption but energy-decadence: the sacral running out of fuel because commitments have been placed in too many directions. Sacral people who make decisions based on emotional system, throat, or mind rather than sacral response create this problem routinely. Energy spread too thin across too many cycles cannot complete any of them. The corrective is sacral commitment only — the "uh-huh" that the sacral knows before the mind has an opinion. When commitment is sacral, the energy is available to complete the cycle. When it isn't, guilt follows the broken promise and the unfinished cycle.

The Collective Nature of This Energy

Gate 42 is collective energy — it is there for collective purposes, not personal accumulation. Ra described the collective abstract stream as the most social of all circuitry: the capacity and need to share is inherent in it. The diversification Gate 42 pursues is not selfish variety-seeking; it is building a bank of varied experience that can be shared with others who need that wisdom. The King Midas warning at Line 6 (Nurturing) is instructive: material success that cannot be translated into nourishment for others has missed the point. The gate's growth is always in service of something beyond the individual cycle.

Lines and the Completion Challenge

Line 1 (Diversification) risks the centrifugal pull of surplus resources — expanding in too many directions simultaneously until energy-decadence collapses the foundation. Line 2 (Identification) projects resource-availability outward; careful research determines where maximum growth is possible. Two people using resources twice as fast is Line 2's practical warning. Line 3 (Trial and Error) learns efficiency through elimination — in decrease, going alone is sometimes the correct answer. Line 4 (Organizer) is pragmatism over social environment — the surgeon cannot let the social dynamics of the operating room override what the procedure requires. Line 5 (Self-Actualization) balances freedom and limitation, able to complete cycles alone when resources permit. Line 6 (Nurturing) watches the difference between growth that nourishes others and growth that, like Midas touching food, converts everything into an inedible form of success.
