Progress
Change
Overview
Gate 35 — Progress — is located in the Throat Center within the Collective Abstract Circuit. Its I Ching hexagram is Progress. It forms Channel 35-36 (Transitoriness) with harmonic gate 36 in the Solar Plexus, creating the design the Jack of All Trades. The Throat here speaks "I feel" — almost always meaning "I feel like change."
The gate opposite Gate 35 on the mandala is Gate 16 (Enthusiasm), which develops talent through repetition. Gate 35 develops talent through breadth. Playing 25 instruments because you never stayed long enough to master any one of them is not failure for Gate 35 — it is the mechanism. The advisory capacity that comes from having touched many experiences is the gift. The shadow is expecting mastery and being disappointed when all you collected was exposure.
Key Points
- Voice of seeking experience
- Restless drive for change
- Progress through new adventures
- Must wait for emotional clarity
The 6 Lines
Humility
Ability accepting rejection. Artist accepting rejection as process-part foundation (Venus exalted art/life oneness), or self-destructive rejection reaction—worthlessness loss destroying confidence (Neptune detriment humiliation).
Creative Block
Lack of inspiration stopping progress. Attunement with muse vagaries recognizing creativity ebbs/flows (Venus exalted), or need taking mundane action overcoming emptiness—uninspired non-progress (Moon detriment fear/stasis).
Collaboration
Blind openness to emotional wave. Whole greater than parts—benefic encouraging others expanding progress communally (Jupiter exalted experience-openness), or need being center ignoring others' importance seeking experience selfishly (Sun detriment).
Hunger
Insatiable appetite for progress. Moon-phased obsession abating naturally over lifetime (Moon exalted experiential mastery timing), or change-for-change's-sake stepping toes leading recriminations through manipulation (Pluto detriment).
Altruism
Sacrifice of personal for communal progress. Interaction/harmony principles communicated successfully benefiting whole (Mercury exalted), or altruistic cooperation regretting personal expansion lost locking into repeated experience (Jupiter detriment boredom).
Rectification
Energy to correct. Crystallization process coupled ambition assuring timely effective correction (Saturn exalted progressive corrective change), or destructive severity ensuring correction meeting resistance reinforcing situations (Mars detriment heaviness).
Practical Tips
- Wait for emotional clarity before new experiences
- Progress comes through correct adventures
- Change serves understanding
Not-Self Signs
- Restless seeking without satisfaction
- Acting on emotional impulse
- Exhaustion from too much change
Deep Dive
The Experiential Way
Gate 35 operates under constant Solar Plexus pressure — the emotional wave is its motor. "I feel" as a Throat expression means experience is not chosen through logic or planning; it is chosen through feeling. This makes the gate vulnerable: someone riding the wave toward an experience, then riding it away, may cause disruption in relationships or commitments. The abstract stream's law applies strictly here — experience once, reflect, move to the next. Repeating the same experience destroys health for this gate. Ra gave the example of making love in a canoe: once teaches you something, twice risks drowning. The instruction is not to be careless with experience but to honor the single-pass nature of the abstract path.
Channel of Transitoriness
With Gate 36 in the Solar Plexus, the Channel of Transitoriness completes. Gate 36 is the gate of crisis, of inexperience generating the hunger that drives experience. Together, 35 and 36 create someone who enters experience without knowing what it will bring, is moved through it by an emotional wave, and exits having collected something for the collective bank. Ra noted this channel is also deeply sexual — 36 as penetration, 35 as manifestation. The collective impersonal quality is important: the experience is not personal accumulation for its own sake, it is experience feeding the shared human story. That framing can help people with this gate make sense of why they feel driven toward novelty that others find destabilizing.
The Expectation Problem
Gate 35 expects that doing "this or that" will deliver a specific result. Ra described this as the expectation versus identification dynamic — Gate 16's logical talent expects "if I repeat this, I'll get that," while Gate 35 expects "if I try this, I'll get that experience." The disappointment comes when the experience only delivers itself, not a promised outcome. Integration for this gate means accepting that experience is the reward. The corrective value — the wisdom gathered — is a bonus that often arrives well after the fact, in reflection, not during the wave itself.
Line Notes
Line 1 (Humility) requires the capacity to accept rejection as part of the artistic path — self-worth cannot depend on the response. Line 2 (Creative Block) teaches that the muse ebbs and flows; jumping prematurely into uninspired action achieves nothing. Line 3 (Collaboration) opens blindly to the emotional wave, learns through chaos. Line 4 (Hunger) carries a lifelong appetite that Phase down naturally over decades — manipulation is the shadow when hunger overrides discernment. Line 5 (Altruism) can get locked into repeating experiences for others when what it actually needs is fresh territory. Line 6 (Rectification) insists on depth in every experience — the corrective impulse can become so heavy that spontaneous joy finds no opening.
