Deliverance
Aloneness
Overview
Gate 40 — Deliverance — lives in the Heart/Ego Center within the Tribal Circuit. Its I Ching hexagram is Deliverance. It forms Channel 40-37 (Community) with harmonic gate 37 in the Solar Plexus, creating what the Design of Part Seeking Whole — a mystical bridge, one of six in the system. Gate 40 is also one of three gates of aloneness (12, 33, 40), carrying a persistent sense of being alone even when surrounded by others.
The keynote is the Point of Transition Between Struggle and Liberation. The ego delivers — provides resources, applies willpower, does the work the tribe needs done. But the ego cannot sustain that effort without periods of genuine liberation. Rest is not preference. It is the biological rhythm of the Heart Center, mirroring the heart that beats and then rests, the stomach that eats and then digests. Willpower that is never released from struggle collapses.
Key Points
- Will to be alone
- Aloneness for renewal
- Delivering on bargains requires rest
- Must honor need for solitude
The 6 Lines
Recuperate Unapologetically
Your aloneness enjoyment serves rest requirement—friends are valuable when not telling you problems needing willpower to address. Relax, enjoy fruits of labor naturally, then ready to work again cyclically. - **Line 2 - Aloneness Protects:** Your resoluteness sheds hampered-liberation qualities through rest priority. Recognition develops—others seeing in, pulling will presence, requiring defensive wisdom learning gradually. - **Line 3 - Avoid Negatives:** Your humility learns better alone than d
Resoluteness
Power and authority in deliverance (aloneness) to shed forever the qualities which hampered liberation. Power through aloneness, recognizing others' importance and disruptive effect—second-line learning; light on inside the house, people see in recognizing strong will potential (Pluto exalted aloneness value). Or the loneliness of power blinding ego to possible disruptive effect—pulled into inappropriately, stuck; people walking by looking through window, pulling on willpower unexpectedly (Neptu
Humility
The calculated avoidance of attracting the attention of negative forces. Capacity of ego to avoid negative forces even if it means being alone—trial and error learning; subtlety that can enjoy deliverance without flaunting (Pluto exalted). Or ego arrogance that demands attention and gets it—dealing with negative forces pulling will inappropriately; the wrong massage dependency creating vulnerability (Mars detriment).
Organization
The power to transform and the intuitive intellect to select and organize for the purpose of maintaining deliverance. The more you have your life together on the material plane, organized and active, the more you can maintain your separateness—work then rest healthily (Mars exalted healthy pattern). Or empowering ego through organizing others constantly, dropping dead from overwork—preference for quantity which may destabilize deliverance; workaholics; fourth-line fixed externalization, one-trac
Rigidity
Recognition that to achieve liberation all negative forces must be rejected. The revolutionary that demands absolute victory—power of ego maintained in rejection of negative relationships (Uranus exalted revolutionary). Or weakness of ego through loneliness—not rejecting negative relationships, maintaining massage-survival vulnerability even when they should push away (Pluto detriment).
Decapitation
Necessary destruction of inferior forces in positions of power before liberation. The authority and magnanimity to remove from power only those which deserve such drastic treatment—power and authority of ego to eject individuals in legitimate defense of the group (Sun exalted). Or, exemplified by the terror of the French Revolution, where the idea of who was deserving of punishment was cruelly extended to an entire class—distortion of ego through power and authority; false bargains creating infe

Deep Dive
The Work-Rest Rhythm
Ra's teaching on Gate 40 is among the most practical in the system. The ego has a time for struggle and a required liberation. No ego can stay with effort indefinitely — the will can only be pushed so far before it demands freedom from the struggle. The key is that the relationship bargain must be kept crystal clear and renegotiated often. You are willing to work, to provide, to apply willpower for family or community — but those you provide for get access to what you've earned only if they hold their side of the agreement. Appreciation, emotional support, rest, and freedom to recuperate are what the stomach needs in exchange for what it delivers.
The Tribal Bargain with Gate 37
Gate 40 seeks Gate 37 (The Family) in the Solar Plexus to complete the Channel of Community. Gate 37 provides the affection, the touch, the sensitivity — the "massage" that motivates willpower to activate. Without Gate 37, willpower lacks a pull; it remains rested but unmotivated. With Gate 37, the marriage contract dynamic emerges: provision in exchange for emotional support, appreciation, and genuine rest. Ra noted that the long-term partner who comes home and throws themselves on the sofa while the household waits is not lazy — that is the ego requiring liberation. Demanding from it in that moment creates problems, because willpower that cannot rest cannot sustain.
Lines and the Ego's Range
The first three lines of Gate 40 are not socially gifted — they are foundation-interested, invisible to others until the refrigerator is empty and no one can find them. Line 1 (Recuperation) projects "don't need you" while actually requiring massage to motivate, a contradiction that confuses partners. Line 2 (Resoluteness) has a light on inside that others see, pulling at its will presence — defensive learning is required to protect what it built through aloneness. Line 3 (Humility) learns through trial and error that being alone is better than dealing with negative forces who require inappropriate ego massage. Line 4 (Organization) is the workaholic line: fixed on externalizing work, capable of dropping dead from overwork rather than respecting the rhythm. Line 5 (Rigidity) projects societally as doing things their way or not at all, while secretly vulnerable to loneliness and bad massage dependency. Line 6 (Decapitation) carries the authority to remove inferior forces from positions of power — and the distortion looks like the French Revolution: punishment extended far beyond those who actually deserved it.
Liberation as a Mundane Right
Ra was careful to distinguish Gate 40's liberation from spiritual concepts of enlightenment. This is not satori. Liberation here means the mundane freedom from struggle — recovery, rest, the backyard snooze, the blank brain in front of the television. This is the biological necessity of the Ego Center, not a spiritual aspiration. When partners understand this, the dynamic shifts: rest is not rejection, aloneness is not withdrawal from love, and "don't bother me" is not a statement about the relationship. It is the Ego Center completing its rhythm before it can deliver again. Honoring this cycle is what keeps the bargain alive long-term.
