Fellowship
The Listener
Overview
The Fellowship of Man — Hexagram 13 — is one of the four Sphinx gates in the G Center, but its role differs from Gates 1, 2, and 7. While Gate 7 looks forward through the windshield, Gate 13 watches through the rearview mirror. It belongs to the Collective Abstract Circuit and forms Channel 13-33 (The Prodigal) with Gate 33 in the Throat. Its keynote is universal ideas and values in ordered framework.
Gate 13 is the listener. It collects reflections, secrets, and history from others. Not because it seeks this role — that the lower trigram hears by accident, broken in on by others who unburden themselves without invitation. The upper trigram actively recognizes the opportunity and burden of the listening role. Either way, the gate accumulates what others share.
This stored memory serves the abstract circuit's function: allowing each generation to advance beyond the previous one by accessing what has already been lived. Gate 13 is the keeper of oral and written history that accelerates collective learning.

The 6 Lines

Ability to relate with equanimity. Role of openness listening with affection, or openness never free of motives.
Bigotry
Fellowship existing only for particular type. Openness through tolerance, or narrowness where practically no one is worth listening to.
Pessimism
Belief that best can never be achieved. Lack of trust transformed by concrete evidence, or pessimism exalted to art form—satire.
Fatigue
Point of exhaustion from endless listening. Openness leading to silence and reflection, or vulnerability through excessive openness.
The Savior
Ability to overcome obstacles for humanity's betterment. Gift for finding roles for others, or practical administration.
The Optimist
Accepting limited interaction as step toward union. Hope that openness leads to better relationships, or naive translation of mutual interest into universality.
Practical Tips
- Honor your gift of listening
- Set boundaries to avoid overwhelm
- Share stories only when invited
Not-Self Signs
- Taking on others' stories as your burden
- Exhaustion from over-listening
- Sharing secrets inappropriately
Deep Dive
Empathy, Bigotry, and Everything Between
The six lines of Gate 13 describe the range of what listening actually looks like. Line 1 (Empathy) listens with affection and equanimity, though never entirely free of self-protective motive. Line 2 (Bigotry) maintains fellowship only for particular types — forced to hear many fools, developing discriminatory filters about who is worth the listening.
Line 3 (Pessimism) develops deep mistrust through trial and error, hearing propaganda and lies until cynicism becomes, an art form — satire. Each of these is a legitimate expression of the gate, not a deviation from it.
The Burden of Being Found
People with Gate 13 defined are found by others who need to share. Strangers confide. Acquaintances reveal more than they planned to. This happens continuously, not because Gate 13 people advertise their availability but because the gate creates the auric condition that invites it.
Line 4 (Fatigue) names the predictable consequence: exhaustion from endless listening. The integration advice is direct: schedule listening, then schedule silence. Exhaustion signals capacity exceeded. Rest before collapse, not after.
What Comes Out Through Gate 33
Gate 13 stores what it hears. Gate 33 (Throat) gives voice to what has been stored — the wisdom, the experience, the accumulated reflections of others. What emerges through Gate 33 may surprise the person carrying it. this explicitly: what pops out through Gate 33 from Gate 13's storage is natural, not always consciously controlled.
The Channel 13-33 (The Prodigal) completes the abstract circuit's work. Nothing is fully learned until the process is over and can be reflected upon. Gate 13 holds the raw material. Gate 33 processes it into something that can be shared and inspire others.
