Ra described the 3/60 pulsing impulse of Gate 39 as the instinct to eat — specifically, to determine who you eat with. The gate taps feet, makes noise, does something slightly off to see who tolerates it and who doesn't. People who can't tolerate the provocation show themselves quickly. People who don't react are the right ones. Ra acknowledged that most people with Gate 39 dislike this quality in themselves. The reactions they provoke are often painful to witness. But discontinuing the provocation means less spirit-finding, less correct mutation — and the individual's responsibility to the totality through mutation goes unmet. The thick skin required is not optional; it is built by understanding the purpose.

When Gate 39 connects with Gate 55 in the Solar Plexus, the Channel of Emoting forms. Gate 55 is the gate of spirit and mood — the sixth line of Gate 55 is the metamorphosis gate, the potential for the transformation that Gate 39's provocation is helping prepare. The moody quality of this channel comes from the Solar Plexus wave interacting with Root adrenaline: the mood determines when provocation fires, and the provocation fuels the mutation when the right spirit responds. Without Gate 55, Gate 39 fuel lacks a feeling target. With it, the question "who has the right spirit?" has a genuine possibility of being answered.

Line 1 (Disengagement) pulls back when provoked, tries again — the most common expression. Ra noted that most of the planet operates this way with Gate 39 energy. Line 2 (Confrontation) is projected provocative even when sitting still and motionless; the direct assault back is equally automatic. Line 3 (Responsibility) recognizes that sometimes mutation requires self-sacrifice — the classroom bully challenging the teacher to protect others, knowing punishment will follow. Line 4 (Temperance) navigates three keynotes simultaneously: feelings, instincts, and timing. Getting all three right is a complex art. Line 5 (Single-mindedness) is projected provocative, meaning people avoid engagement — the gate rarely gets the chance to actually provoke, and taking shortcuts around genuine spirit-testing defeats the purpose. Line 6 (The Troubleshooter) is the gate's gift fully expressed: natural problem-solving that penetrates to the core of what needs mutation.

Gate 39 is present from birth — and its provocation function begins that early. Ra noted that some parents of Gate 39 infants felt provoked from their first days. The conditioning that results can be damaging: being told repeatedly that the provocative nature is wrong, bad, manipulative, or deliberately cruel shapes a person who either suppresses the gift entirely or expresses it without any sense of its purpose. The gate's intelligence is evolutionary — it finds the right spirit for mutation. That is not a minor gift. Children with Gate 39 need to hear that their nature has a reason, even if the full explanation comes later.
