The Family

Modern ears often hear "affection for resources" as transactional in a diminishing sense. Ra was direct about why this framing misses the point. Clean bargains are tribal wisdom. "I'll do this for you if you'll do that for me — shall we shake on it?" is clarity, not coldness. The sensitivity of Gate 37 recognizes, through touch and the emotional wave, who will honor the exchange and who won't. Harmony is key — beauty and values endure through harmonic sensitivity, not abstract principle. When the bargain is violated, the wave ratchets up until it releases. Understanding this prevents taking the explosion personally; it is the tribal mechanism correcting an imbalance.

Gate 37 seeks Gate 40 in the Ego/Heart Center to complete the Channel of Community. Gate 40 is the stomach — it provides resources, delivery, the capacity to sustain provision through willpower. Gate 37 is the mouth — it speaks the bargain, offers affection, recognizes need through sensitivity. Together they form the tribal spine: provision in exchange for appreciation, rest, and emotional support. Ra described this as a mystical channel, one of the bridges through which individual and community find each other. Without Gate 40, Gate 37's affection has no resource backing — needs remain unfulfilled. With it, the bargain completes and the community can function.

Line 5 (Love) is what Ra called the great seduction of Gate 37 — universalizing harmony and sharing, billing love while the hope/pain wave moves underneath. People drawn into Gate 37's orbit through love can become emotionally dependent, and dependency through the tribal wave can eventually generate hatred at the source. This is the shadow of Line 5 at its most difficult. The wave is real, and people who are undefined in the Solar Plexus get conditioned and amplified by it. The antidote is not to suppress the love — it is to be honest about the wave's movement so that dependency does not calcify into resentment.

Line 1 (Mother/Father) establishes family guidelines rooted in sensitivity — the only line in Gate 37 with no detriment, only polarity. Spirit mutation enters the tribe through this line first. Line 2 (Responsibility) teaches that cooperation requires individual accountability — projecting responsibility outward creates dependency, not community. Line 3 (Evenhandedness) adapts behavior to maintain resource access, with the shadow of changing rules unpredictably, destabilizing everyone. Line 4 (Leadership by Example) brings highest principles into practical daily affairs — the source of tension is when traditional archetypes of who leads conflict with who actually provides. Line 6 (Purpose) is the yearning for the transcendent: 70 percent of women spending time hauling water asking "What is it all for?" Purpose is the deepest question Gate 37 carries, and it doesn't always find its answer in the material bargain alone.
