Treading
Behavior of the Self
Overview
Treading — Hexagram 10 — stands out among all G Center gates for its structural complexity. Identified in The teachings as the most complex vessel gate, it forms not one but three possible channels: 10-20 (Awakening) with the Throat, 10-34 (Exploration) with the Sacral, and 10-57 (Perfected Form) with the Spleen. It belongs to the Integration Channels and carries the keynote: behavior of the self.
Gate 10 is a Role Gate encoding the underlying genetic pattern of behavior — not just personal behavior, but the archetypal code for all line structures across the entire BodyGraph. Each of its six lines demonstrates the correct behavior for that line position everywhere in the chart. Line 1 shows how all first lines naturally act. Line 2 shows all second lines. This is what makes it the most powerful conditioning gate in Human Design.
The gate pours the Vessel of Love into each individual. The moment someone is genuinely being themselves, their capacity for survival strengthens. Love of self flows through correct behavior, not through performance of behavior someone else approves.
Key Points
- Most powerful conditioning gate
- Code of behavior for all line positions
- Self-love through correct behavior
- Being yourself makes life easier
The 6 Lines
Modesty (The Chameleon)
Foundation of accepting one's place in hierarchy. Selfless adaptation to circumstance or hurt feelings from over-sensitivity.
The Hermit
Successful side-stepping of conditioning through isolation. Mental enrichment in aloneness or angry exile from negative forces.
The Martyr
Trial and error in behavior ultimately becoming enduring example, or pursuing martyrdom for personal aggrandizement.
The Opportunist
Fixed on waiting for right moment to externalize nature. Accepting norms until successful transformation can be engendered.
The Heretic
Direct challenge to behavioral norms and traditions. Principled behavior challenging tradition or being punished for attacking surface behaviors.
The Role Model
Perfect expression of norms through action rather than words. Constant example refocusing others on behavioral integrity despite personal hypocrisies.
Practical Tips
- Be yourself—fighting your nature destroys self-love
- Accept that your behavior will be challenged
- Your example teaches more than your words
Not-Self Signs
- Being conditioned away from natural behavior
- Taking behavioral criticism too personally
- Trying to change to fit others' expectations
Deep Dive
Three Channels, Three Expressions
Gate 10's three possible channel connections each express a different dimension of behavioral identity. Channel 10-20 (Awakening) gives voice to being in the now, the expression of commitment to higher principles through presence. Channel 10-34 (Exploration) connects behavioral identity to Sacral power — the archetypal force of simply being. Channel 10-57 (Perfected Form) links behavior to splenic intuition, creating survival through correct conduct guided by immediate awareness.
Which connection (or combination) is active in a chart shapes how this gate's behavioral energy manifests. All three carry the same core instruction: be yourself.
The Six Behavioral Archetypes
The Chameleon (Line 1) accepts their place in hierarchy through selfless adaptation. The Hermit (Line 2) sidesteps conditioning through necessary withdrawal. The Martyr (Line 3) learns through trial and error, eventually becoming an enduring example. The Opportunist (Line 4) waits for the right moment before externalizing their nature.
The Heretic (Line 5) challenges behavioral norms and traditions through principled confrontation. The Role Model (Line 6) expresses correct behavior through action rather than words, a constant example without requiring personal perfection. Each of these is design, not personality type.
Conditioning and Self-Love
Gate 10 is the most powerful conditioning gate because it defines behavioral norms. When Gate 10 individuals enter a space, their conduct becomes an unconscious standard others measure themselves against. This happens without intention.
The primary challenge is being conditioned away from natural behavior by parents, partners, or society insisting on behavioral conformity. Each deviation from natural conduct weakens self-love. Each return to authentic behavior strengthens it. The instruction is simple and difficult: behave as yourself.
