The actual fear is that the individual path fails to justify incarnation—that struggle produces nothing worth having endured. This fear motivates the gate's characteristic risk-taking: risks are attempts to answer the question. Each struggle entered into is a test. Line 6 (Blaze of Glory) demonstrates this most clearly: sacrifice rather than capitulation, regeneration regardless of price. The splenic awareness checks whether this specific risk merits that commitment before the choice is made.

The channel 28-38 is called the design of stubbornness, and stubbornness here is not resistance to change—it is the persistent checking that precedes commitment. Gate 28 Line 1 (Preparation) describes using energy to gather detail before risking. The aesthetic appreciation that plans without blind gambling. When stubbornness is healthy, it is the refusal to gamble until the conditions are understood. When it becomes shadow, it is the endless planning that never converts to actual risk—paralysis dressed as prudence.

Line 2 of Gate 28 is called Shaking Hands with the Devil—the distasteful alliance justified by the end. Sun's exaltation gives a drive to win that accepts whatever means are required. Jupiter's detriment creates anxiety: sacrificing principles without any guarantee of victory, then experiencing devastating depression when the sacrifice yields nothing. People with 28.2 must recognize this cycle—that the depression after loss is not proof life lacks value, but information about which alliances and which struggles actually deserve that price.
