Preponderance of the Great
The Game Player
Overview
Gate 28, Preponderance of the Great, sits in the Spleen Center and pairs with Gate 38 in the Root to form Channel 28-38: the Channel of Struggle, described as a design of stubbornness. The I Ching name is Preponderance of the Great. The keynote: the awareness to struggle or not—finding life's worth.
Gate 28 carries what Ra identified as the fear of death. But the fear is not of physical death—it is of meaningless existence. The gate's actual question is: is my way worthwhile? Is being individual in life valuable enough to justify the struggle? This splenic awareness operates existentially and acoustically, listening before risking, using stubbornness as a preparation tool rather than a defense mechanism.
This is the game player gate. It takes risks—but only after gathering sufficient detail to assess whether the specific struggle will prove life worthwhile. Blind gambling is not Gate 28's nature. Informed risk-taking that tests genuine value questions is. The gate needs Gate 38's opposition to define the challenge. Without something real to push against, there is no struggle, and without struggle, no way to discover whether existence justifies itself.
Key Points
- Intuitive awareness of risk
- Courage to struggle with purpose
- Life as meaningful game
- Fear of purposelessness
The 6 Lines
Preparation
Using energy to detail before risk. Aesthetic appreciation planning potentially lacking application (Venus detriment inactive—pure preparation without blind gambling), or intuition for detail without application potential.
Shaking Hands with Devil
Distasteful alliance justified by end. Drive to win accepting any means (Sun exalted), or anxiety sacrificing principles without victory guarantee creating deep depression (Jupiter detriment).
Adventurism
Unfounded risktaking needing caution. Basic Saturn conservatism providing prudence even adventurously (exalted), or perverse Jupiter expansiveness rationalizing failure ensuring worthlessness feeling (detriment).
Holding On
Ability keeping grip through struggle. Depth of intuition at best in struggle serving others (Jupiter exalted), or stubbornly selfish holding refusing to share struggle capacity (Mercury detriment).
Treachery
Abusing trust universalizing struggle. Getting everyone struggling for life value without choosing sides (Pluto function), or breaking alliances constantly destabilizing whole seeking better mutation (Sun detriment).
Blaze of Glory
Actions matching words guaranteeing success. Sacrifice rather than capitulation—regeneration regardless of price (Pluto exalted), or self-destruction potential burning out from hopelessness (Neptune detriment 1958-1960 generation).
Practical Tips
- Follow intuition about risk
- Struggle for what truly matters
- Fear of purposelessness guides correctly
Not-Self Signs
- Risking without intuitive guidance

- Paralyzed by fear of purposelessness
Deep Dive
Fear of a Meaningless Life
Ra's teaching distinguishes Gate 28's fear of death from standard mortality fear. The actual fear is that the individual path fails to justify incarnation—that struggle produces nothing worth having endured. This fear motivates the gate's characteristic risk-taking: risks are attempts to answer the question. Each struggle entered into is a test. Line 6 (Blaze of Glory) demonstrates this most clearly: sacrifice rather than capitulation, regeneration regardless of price. The splenic awareness checks whether this specific risk merits that commitment before the choice is made.
Stubbornness as Preparation
The channel 28-38 is called the design of stubbornness, and stubbornness here is not resistance to change—it is the persistent checking that precedes commitment. Gate 28 Line 1 (Preparation) describes using energy to gather detail before risking. The aesthetic appreciation that plans without blind gambling. When stubbornness is healthy, it is the refusal to gamble until the conditions are understood. When it becomes shadow, it is the endless planning that never converts to actual risk—paralysis dressed as prudence.
Line 2 and the Devil's Alliance
Line 2 of Gate 28 is called Shaking Hands with the Devil—the distasteful alliance justified by the end. Sun's exaltation gives a drive to win that accepts whatever means are required. Jupiter's detriment creates anxiety: sacrificing principles without any guarantee of victory, then experiencing devastating depression when the sacrifice yields nothing. People with 28.2 must recognize this cycle—that the depression after loss is not proof life lacks value, but information about which alliances and which struggles actually deserve that price.
